Traceability through the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is essential in the livestock industry for food safety and quality assurance. Traceability, from the farm and through the supply chain, enables the Australian red meat industry to protect its reputation as a producer of clean, safe and high quality red meat. From 1 January 2027 all sheep and goats must be fitted with an NLIS accredited electronic identification device (eID) before leaving a property, regardless of age.
